Whakatane Town AFC

Whakatane Town AFC is proud to announce its Senior Men’s coaches for the 2020 Season.

Men’s Federation Championship

Graeme Kinney has come aboard after a brief time off from the club, in which in his previous season in 2018 he led the Men’s Bay One team to a League Title.
Graeme provides a nuanced and advanced approach to the game and holds technical and well-drilled training sessions, as well as providing excellent player management skills and a deep-understanding of what it takes to manage a successful side. Aside from assistant coaching roles in some of the highest levels of the game, and providing mentorship to different clubs and coaches in the area, Graeme has coached with a multitude of youth teams, a highly successful stint with Trident High School, and our own WaiBOP Youth Team. Graeme was the perfect candidate for the role after the clubs Bay One side won the league title two seasons in a row and moved into the Federation Championship League. We are extremely fortunate to have him on board, and the entire club is excited by his return.

Men’s Baywide One

This years Men’s Bay One team will be coached and managed by Cal Pirihi. Cal enters the role of Player-Coach for the Men’s Bay One side after participating in both Title winning seasons 2019/2019. Cal has been a Whakatane Town Player for the past five years, and on the football field is known as a force to be reckoned with. The players who play alongside him also know that Cal often understands and approaches the game at a higher level, able to offer advice and suggest tactical changes before anyone else. Always previously a vocal presence in the Changing Room, it seems natural that Cal will now lead the Bay One team in a coaching capacity. Cal previously played for Opotiki Football club for 13 years, including coaching for 8, and as President of the club during that time. Cal is Whakatane AFC’s Club Captain, and holds a committee position, and he continues to bring a wealth of knowledge, and a strong work ethic to the club. The club is thrilled that we have such a player-coach leading the Bay 1 Team.

We look forward to providing you with updates as the season begins and continues, and wish both teams success for the coming season.
