Whakatane Hawks 11th grade side has started its season with a huge 15-1 win over Saint Josephs Stingers. They played as a team throughout the match with all players making an effort to pass the ball around and keep possession of the ball. Player of the day Micah-Harrison Walker scored the first goal and ended up with two for the day. Good defence from Jack Moon, Parth Katri and Leah Prescott allowed the Hawks to press forward throughout the game and it was Leon Scholes and Maddie Gibson, playing on the wings, who set up many goal scoring chances for their team mates with some great runs down the flanks and putting in several crosses. Harrison Wakefield also managed to get on the score sheet and played well in the midfield, but it was Akiwa Te Aho (5), Bryn Evans (5) and Alex Iremonger (3) who managed to get three or more goals each and push the score line out.
This week they were at home to Opotiki Magpies and put on another great performance winning 13-0. Nathan Warner was often involved on the left wing and set up many chances while Ramahaki Nikora played some good passes and made some crucial tackles. Akiwa Te Aho was solid in defence and always a threat on attack and managed two more goals to add to his tally while Alex Iremonger again managed to score a hat trick. Jack Moon scored from distance and Bryn Evans continued his form to score 6 goals. Leah Prescott scored her first goal of the season and was awarded player of the day for a well rounded effort.
It has been an impressive display of football passing and finishing that the team hopes to continue and improve on throughout the rest of the season.
